BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Tirofiban is an antiplatelet drug. It belongs to a class of anticoagulants named glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors.

Tirofiban is a type of "blood thinner" used (usually in combination with heparin) to help prevent blood clotting that occurs during certain heart conditions (e.g., acute coronary syndrome) or medical procedures (e.g., percutaneous coronary intervention-PCI).

CLINICAL USE

For treatment, in combination with heparin, of acute coronary syndrome, including patients who are to be managed medically and those undergoing PTCA or atherectomy.

Tirofiban is used for: Treating unstable angina or certain types of heart attacks in combination with heparin

MODE OF ACTION

Tirofiban is a reversible antagonist of fibrinogen binding to the GP IIb/IIIa receptor, the major platelet surface receptor involved in platelet aggregation. Platelet aggregation inhibition is reversible following cessation of the infusion of Tirofiban.
